Truman was so poor after he retired as President they literally created the presidential pension for him.

I fear this week may be a quiet one; while I am close to finishing off President Arthur, my chosen book for Harry S. Truman (the “S” is deliberately ambiguous to refer to either of his grandfathers) is 1200 pages. However, it’s written by David McCullough, and I now have access to three copies (two physical, one ebook) resulting from a wacky interlibrary loan story.
