Today’s prompt from Long and Short Reviews is “What is your favorite hobby and why?” But first, WWWednesday!
WHAT have you finished recently? Both Return of the Great Powers and One No, Many Yeses, late last week.
WHAT are you reading now? The Last Tsar and the Selma architectural book. The problem with the architectural book is that — being the local history librarian — I keep wanting to research stuff it brings up. I also started The Half-Blood Heir, some historical fiction by Andrew Wareham, for a more ‘fun’ read. It’s about a major at the end of the Napoleonic wars who is struggling to figure out a path forward in peacetime receiving a letter that tells him, “Harry, yer a gen’l’man”.
WHAT are you reading next? ….something fun/relaxing. The only fiction I’ve done this month was 1984. I had started The End of the World is Just the Beginning, on the consequences for the ‘rules-based-international-order- as Americans are less and less interested in being the global sheriff in town, but I’m feeling burnt out at the moment; I can’t even stir myself to short-round the two books I mentioned above.
So, favorite hobby? That’s hard to say: there’s reading and writing, of course, but I do that constantly so I don’t know if it’s a hobby so much as a state of being. Before my ankle injury, walking and hiking were favorite ways to spend the weekend, and I’m also a raging shutterbug.
Reading and writing are brilliant ways to escape the world for a bit. You can go anywhere with a bit of imagination.
I love taking photos, too, but am not very good at it. Enjoy your reads, too.
My post
Photography is so fun! How is your ankle doing these days?
It’s about the same. Unfortunately the only prescription is rest, but my job is fairly active (despite being in a library), so it doesn’t get as much as it needs. I’m OK with everyday use but longer hikes are out of the question. I’ve done some shorter non-strenuous ones, though.
I’m not familiar with any of these books!
Beside reading, I also love hiking, birding.
Then I can add gardening (while listening to audiobooks), painting, and doing jigsaw puzzles (while listening to audiobooks of course)
Painting is something I keep meaning to try. I was able to do it as a kid in elementary school, but my area didn’t have crafts stores or anything outside of Walmart, so I kinda forgot about it until recent years when a friend of mine coaxed me into painting Christmas ornaments with her.
Oh nice!
And now there are so many great tutorials, for instance on youtube to start painting
Thanks for stopping by, and I know what you mean about the library. I work from home now, on the computer, and have to force myself to get up and move!
Hope your ankle gets completely well soon!
Photography is so wonderful. Wish I was better at it. My husband has that talent. Sorry to hear about your injury. My daughter is looking to read 1984 soon. Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog.
I hope she finds it thought-provoking!
I’m getting back into walking/hiking, especially as the weather gets better and the dog gets more insistent. I’m an inconsistent photographer; I have a decent camera and a good lens, but I don’t think to get it out very often. (I actually got it for doing event photography for one of the local music festivals, which was both fun and stressful.) But yes, reading and writing are hobbies that border on being obsessions!
Walking and hiking are some of my favorite hobbies as well. Sorry to hear about your ankle. It’s always tough when an injury makes it tricky to get out and enjoy nature.
Enjoyed your post. I love your hobbies, but I am horrid at photography. Half the time my feet even show in the picture:)
