The Sher-dar madraseh is yet another sign that Islam in the Iranian world is like a woman’s plain chador worn over party finery, a cloak that covers, disguises, or incorporates much traditionally Iranian, pre-Islamic, Zoroastrian belief. This time, General Alchin Yalangtush Bahadur had let the veil slip and revealed his real religious underwear.
In Search of Zarathustra
This week’s Top Ten Tuesday is releases we are looking forward to in the first half of 2024. Given how many books there are already printed that I want to read, I am not in the habit of looking for new releases — but I did write down a few titles last year as I heard about them.
The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness, Jonathan Haidt
Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren’t Growing Up, Abigal Schrier
Wolves of Winter, Dan Jones. Sequel to his Essex Dogs.
ST TNG Pliable Truths: A DS9 prequel novel in which Picard mediates between Bajorans and the withdrawing Cardassians. And there’s Ro Laren.
Those were the ones that made my radar. What follows are books from Amazon’s ‘to be released’ list:
The Tusks of Extinction. A SF novel about….resurrecting woolly mammoths. Cool!
Not the End of the World: How We Can Be the First Generation to Build a Sustainable Planet, January 2024.
Filterworld: How Algorithms Flattened Culture, Kyle Chayka
Our Moon: How Earth’s Celestial Companion Transformed the Planet, Guided Evolution, and Made Us Who We Are
Making It in America: The Almost Impossible Quest to Manufacture in the U.S.A (and How It Got That Way).
The Pursuit of Happiness: How Classical Writers on Virtue Inspired the Lives of the Founders and Defined America
I hope the storms are too severe. I’m looking forward to The Tusks of Extinction too, The Mountain in the Sea was excellent.
Thanks! (I assume you meant ‘aren’t’ too severe.. 😉 ) Right now they’re still happening — woke me up around 3 am, so I’m watching Moneyball and puttering around online until we lose power.
Oops! I should really read what I wrote before hitting that reply button.
I understood what you meant! 😉
We had storms come through here last night, too. It’s cold and windy this morning. Hope all is well with you.
The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness and Not the End of the World: How We Can Be the First Generation to Build a Sustainable Planet both sound like books I should read.
Thanks! I think the worst is over and we managed to avoid any warnings. Have heard of power outages but no serious damage.
I’ve read The Tusks of Extinction and it was so unusual, but really really good. I hope you get to read all of these!
You’ve got some really interesting titles here that I’m getting curious about too. I hope you enjoy them when you read them!

I hope you enjoy all of these. They sound interesting!
Glad the Storm passed you by…..!
Thanks! It rolled through overnight with lots of thunder and lightening (I’ve been awake since 2 am and will be nursing coffee all day), but no damage. Florida’s getting it worse.
Yeah, I saw some of the Florida footage. We’ve been lucky here with the flooding. Quite a bit of rain and some wind, but mostly OK. Just cold and (thankfully) dry now. There was a mini/micro tornado in Manchester which was weird…. I was going to say ‘never a dull moment with the British weather’…. But we do get a LOT of *dull* moments!!
Looks like there was a powerful system that hit a week or so ago?
I’ve not heard of these! I hope you enjoy them when you get the chance!
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
We’ve had a few ‘named storms’ blowing through over the last few months. Mostly we’ve had quite a bit of rain. Apparently the 2nd half of 2023 was the wettest recorded since 1890. As it’s ENGLAND we’re talking about… that’s an impressive amount of rain! Oh, and we had the warmest Christmas Day since 1920… [lol]
The Weather Channel has been doing that in the last decade…it’s why I switched to using Accuweather. Naming hurricanes I can understand, but the rest seem gimmicky.
I’m not familiar with any of these books. I hope you enjoy them.
I hope you enjoy all of these!
MAKING IT IN AMERICA and THE ANXIOUS GENERATION are two that caught my eye as well. They both sound like really interesting reads. I hope you enjoy all these!
Happy TTT!
