WHAT have you finished reading recently? The Last Man in Europe, a fictional biography of George Orwell.
WHAT are you reading now? Real England: Battle Against the Bland, Paul Kingsnorth. On the commercial homogenization of England and those who are resisting it. Or were, twenty years ago. I hope they did better than we did across the pond.
WHAT are you reading next? Um…Mr. Wilson, what do you think?
Ok, WHAT is a fictional biography? That’s a complete oxymoron…
That thought HAD crossed my mind. Initially my think is that its a typo.. [grin]
Let’s hope Coffee sets us straight. I’m pretty confused here…
See above reply….perhaps the review will make things less muddled.
Au contraire! Though the meaning is ambiguous. I have read a biography of a fictional character (Life and Times of Horatio Hornblower), and this one is a novel about George Orwell that focuses on his adult life. So it’s….biographical, drawn from what he was doing at the time, but it’s still fiction because the author admits to having to guess as to what Orwell was thinking & feeling.
Life & Times of Horatio Hornblower:
I’ll be interested in your review of ‘Real England: Battle Against the Bland’…. We can be a bit vanilla at times…. But generally we’re OK…
It’s largely about the corporate attack on public space in Britain, the driving out of village pubs and their replacement by Starbucks and the like, the consolidation of farms, etc.
Oh, there’s definitely some of that… But it’s the same in most places with massive global chain stores etc… We do still have a LOT of local and quirky shops though.
Forever a fan of biographical fiction!
